Personal Data
I was born on May 1, 1944 at the Farren Memorial Hospital in Greenfield, Ma.
I graduated from Turners Falls High School, Turners Falls, Ma., Class of '62.
In 1962 I enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed 'boot camp' at Great Lakes, Ill.,
At the beginning of 1963 I attended Radioman class A School for 6 months and went from there to
Newport, R.I., where I reported for duty aboard the
USS Hissem (DE/DER-400) as an RMSN.
While on the Hissem, I served as a Radioman 2nd class and took part in Picket duties at
'Dog Rocks' off the coast of Florida., took an 'around the world cruise" as part of
Operation DeepFreeze '64., and a year and a half of
patrol duty off the Vietnam coast, where I was highlined from the '400' to a supply ship for
transport back to the states and discharge in 1966. I entered the U.S.A.F. in 1967 and was a SSGT in
the 3rd Mobile Comm Group, Tinker AFB, Okla., and the airways stations of Albrook AFB in the
Canal Zone, Panama., and Andrews AFB, Md. I was honorably discharged in 1970. I worked as a
Cable TV technician for the Pioneer Valley Cablevision Co., Amherst, Ma from 1970-1975,
leaving as Chief Technician. I moved to Batesville, Arkansas in 1975 and drove big rigs
for Prime, Inc., and United Van Lines. I migrated to California in 1978 and attended San
Bernardino Valley College in San Bernardino, Ca., graduating in 1982 with an AA degree.
While attending college, I began my career with the County of San Bernardino in San Bernardino,
California. I have been with them for nearly 20 years. Picture at left is of me in 1998 at Mt. Carroll, Ill.,
standing in the Mayor's office where the 'bell' from the U.S.S. Hissem now resides., as Ens.
Joseph Metcalf Hissem (the 400's namesake) was born.
(see web site) I currently am licensed as a ham radio operator and hold the callsign, K1NWB ,
which was FIRST ISSUED to me in 1956. I am currently a member of the
Barstow Amateur Radio Club - WA6TST , and Trustee for the.....
