Nancy GableMar 17, 1998 22:18 Your site has many
interesting links to help bring history alive and to make connections between
those who have served our country. Very interesting and informative. Thanks,
too, for the links to the Mount Carroll Community Web Site. We welcome visitors
to our web site and to our community.
Captain Jim Barber, USN (Ret.)Mar 24, 1998 11:01 The Hissem website
is nostalgic for me. I was C.O. from 1966 to 1968, which included two 7th Fleet
deployments, a lot of time in Vietnam, a lot of time on Taiwan Patrol, and visits
to Bangkok Hong Kong, Jessleton, and Brisbane. A first command is like a first
love: it always has a special place in your heart.
Mike ProffittMar 30, 1998 13:34 I served on the USS
LANSING DER388 1960-1962. We did the barrier patrols out of Pearl Harbor. Sure
nice to see some more DER sailors are around. Really like your page, keep up the
good work. Mike
Joe T. Montano,Jr.Apr 5, 1998 18:31 My very first ship,
worked in B1. Served onboard from May 66' to Sept.67. Went on to serve on USS
Sphinx, USS John R.Perry, USS Charles Berry and USS Duluth. Any one know Larry
Bergman's where abouts?
Dennis FryApr 8, 1998 10:22 Read your account of
Operation Deepfreeze in 63/64 and it was a mirror image of the 64/65 cruise by
the USS Mills DER383. Splendid job on your web page!
Jay PryorMay 28, 1998 11:52 What a treat to find
this site. I was the Communications Officer 1968-69, when we did Market Time,
Taiwan Patrol and SOPA Admin Hong Kong. I've stayed in touch with John Kross (ASW
Officer) and BB Sams (Weapons Officer). I work in the Government Relations
Office at the University of Georgia and hope shipmates find this site and check
in.

Jim BlanchardJun 29, 1998 20:10 Was a long time ago
when we were all in port in Pearl Harbor. I was an Engineman aboard Falgout DER
324 and shared many Fairbanks/Morse 38D81/8 liner cracks with your fellow
enginemen. Enjoyed your site, it brought back many memories of the DER and
Market Time Patrols. I think the DER's are all razor blades now except for some
that became targets or were sold to other countries. Wish there was one to take
the wife and kids aboard and show them what we had to contend with, nevermind
the storms........Jim Blanchard
Mike ProffittJun 30, 1998 22:22 Looks like I have
some competition. Looks great Chuck! 73 Mike
Richard G. SchmidtJul 23, 1998 20:16 I served from 1/1959
to 10/1959 as a RM2. At that time we were doing picket duty in the North
Atlantic between Newfoundland and the Azores Islands.
Mario CardamoneAug 8, 1998 12:08 What a great Web
Site!! I served with the USS Hissem Der 400 from June 65 to February 67 and I
was SN and then I worked in the Laundry and for the last six months I was the
Barber on the Ship. In February 67 I came home on an emergency leave and then I
went to Treasure Island for further transfer and I remained there until April
and then I was discharged 69 days cut to serve overseas for the rest of the
time. If anyone remembers me, either as a Seaman, a Laundryman or Barber it
would be great to hear from you. Last year I was talking to Ernie Demarco (from
Phil.,PA) and I misplaced his address & number - if you know it please pass
it along to me. Thanks and take care!! Hope to hear from you.
Robert F. JacobAug 11, 1998 10:41 Was aboard as a
Corpsman under Doctor Alexander, from 1962-1964; Cuban Crisis and Operation Deep
Freeze under Captain Fontain. What a blessing to find my ship on the computer!
Any other ship mates from this era?
Robert GarmerOct 4, 1998 09:42 I served as Radarman
from 1966 thru 1969. Would like to hear from the gang from that time. I keep in
touch with "Fat Rat".
John EatonOct 4, 1998 23:27 I served from
1966-69 as a Radarman. Like to hear from anyone on board during that time.
During operation Market time. This is a great Web Site. Thanks for giving us a
place to meet and relive old times. The "Fighting 400".
Patrick StroudOct 5, 1998 21:17 Served on Hissem
from Sept 68 to Decom as FTG2.Great ship and a greater crew. Retired USN in June
93 as FCCM(SW).
Gary TaibbiNov 9, 1998 15:24 Served onboard from
7/64-6/66 as SKSN.
Andrew LugoNov 13, 1998 19:59 I served on the USS
Hissem from 5/61 to 4/63. A tough seagoing ship, handled rolls and pitches in
the north-atlantic to always bring us home. We lost the forward 3.50 mount in a
storm and took water that brought into Greenock, Scotland on a list. It served
with courage, honor and distinction in the Cuban blockade of 1962. The Hissem
was only 3 miles of Havana, at GQ 24 hours a day. Ready for battle in what would
have been the supreme sacrafice, until Kruschev backed down. A great ship
indeed.
Brice B. Umstead RM1Nov 20, 1998 15:10 Served aboard USS
Hissem 7/62 - 7/64 in Radio gang OC Div. Had RMC Grady Floyd as Chief Radioman.
He was the best Chief I ever knew (and there have been lots of those). During
this time we worked a picket in the "slot" between Scotland and
Iceland, working from Greenoch, Scotland. We acted as CCC
Command/Control/Communications ship during the search operations for the USS
Thresher which sunk off shore from Boston. Did picket duty near Dog Rock between
Key West and Havana and was in Havana Bay the night President Kennedy made his
speech about Khruschev getting his missiles out of Cuba. After that we went to
Anarctic for Operation Deepfreeze '64. We did very little else during that time.
I am now retired from the Naval Reserve as a CTRC. I would like to hear from
some old Hissem sailors and plan to visit Mt. Carroll, Ill. next summer. My
address is: P. O. Box 12039 Knoxville, TN 37912-0039 423-689-6333
Dennis SaxbergIt's been a long
time, was aboard her in 1967-8 have a lot of good memories! Somewhere in my
closet I have old movies (super 8) of our cruises including crossing the
equator. Would like to share if interested. They may be moldy but what the
"heck". DENNY

Jack CampbellDec 8, 1998 21:06 Found this site by
accident. It was my first ship as an officer (Aug 64 - June 67). Made several
Dog Rocks patrols and took her to Vietnam from Newport. What an experience for a
young fellow. I still think of the experience. Would love to hear form any
shipmates

Rachel "Chavers" MaddenJan 11, 1999 21:35 Derry Z. Chavers
former shipmate of the DER-400. In Loving Memory. Aug.18, 1934 - Jan. 3,1998.
Harry Carlson RMCS USNR (Ret)Jan 24, 1999 22:20 Hard to describe my
feelings when I found the Hissem on the Web. She was my first ship. I reported
aboard in Jul'56, an RMSA fresh from 'A' school, as a member of the
pre-commissioning crew and departed an RM2 in Jun'59. Had the honor of being a
member of the crew that put the Hissem back in commission in Aug'56, so that
makes me a plankowner. Made numerous trips up to the picket line between
Newfoundland and the Azores. Saw lots of water and bad weather, but little else.
I'd do it all over again in a minute. Looking forward to hearing from some old
shipmates.
Bill BrandonJan 29, 1999 13:21 It's good to see
this page for the Hissem and to find so many people who served in her over her
entire life span. I was the DCA from December 1968 to decommissioning in the
spring of 1970. Best to all of you!
James Leet Vannoy, S1/C{GM] and proud of it.Jan 29, 1999 14:09 Hello Shipmates: I
came aboard the Hissem in March 1945 inthe Brooklyn Navy Yard. This was after
the rough crossing when all the gun tubs on the port side were smashed in by a
monster sea. What a sight for a boy from the hills who had hardly ever seen a
ship before! I left her after two convoy trips to Cardiff, Wales and the voyage
to Ulithi, Guam. Tokyo Bay and finally to Green Cove Springs, Fla. This was in
May,1946. I am now the Treasurer of The USS Hissem DE/ Der 400 Association and
will take your membership dues. $10 per year gets you all the reunion and other
news. Send it to : J.L. Vannoy PO Box 646 Austinville, Va. 24312 Make check to
USS Hissem De/Der 400. Association. Slim Summerville is our President and master
mind. Welcome all you young boys from Korea, Vietnam and after. We need you. I
am still looking for some of our long lost shipmates from WW ll times. Thanks to
Charles Walsh For setting up this website. It's great. Come to the reunion in
October. Hope to see you then. Regards, Vannoy

time I was reassigned to Admiral Tyree's staff and went to McMurdo, Antartica
for 5 months. I was on the ship in December 1958 when we went thru a terrible
storm. We averaged 55 knot of wind for a thirty day period. My rank at the time
was Seaman AG. Hope to hear from you and maybe some crewmembers of that time.
