complement and we still won the squadron efficiency award.

Comments: My Dad, Ken Mosher, served as a Pharmacist's Mate on
the Hissem 1945-1946. He was excited when I brought him printouts of
this web site. Dad made several trips across the Atlantic. Was onboard
during the big storm that damaged the gun tubs. He was with the ship in
Pearl Harbor when peace was declared. Said you could have read by the
light from the flares! He remained on the ship until it reached Tokyo
Bay.

Comments: I served aboard the U.S.S. Kirkpatrick DER-318. I know
what picket duty is like in the North Atlantic. I was transferred to the
O'Hare DDR-889 in 1959. I have been trying to get in touch with crew
members but have had very little luck. I wish there were a way to get a
ship's roster. As with many other people, a lot of what I did during
those years was wasted on my youth. I see the value in everything now,
even bouncing around like a cork on the ocean. Most folks will never
know that unique feeling of being totally alone and helpless on a DE at
sea. It sure helped me to see a lot of things.

Comments: I have had so many memories of this great ship since
first hearing from Chuck Walsh. He was in the radio gang. I told him
that he was my pride and joy. He came aboard as RMSN fresh from radio
school. There was no task to difficult nor too menial for Chucky. Just
let him know it needed to be done, and it was. No need to ever check
benind him. I am sure his whole life has been just like that. Last July
I drove to Mt. Carroll Illinois. My old t-shirt and a can of Brasso went
with me. That ship's bell got the polishing of its lifetime. What a
thrill. I spend nearly a half day in the city hall, just reading ship's
history and visiting with the staff at City Hall. What great folks! I
called Admiral Fontaine 2 days before Christmas 1999. He was thrilled to
hear from one of his old "troublemakers". I have lately been
in correspondence with Jennifer Boudreaux, Walter Boudreaux RM3, Danny
Wheatley RM3, Doug Monteith AG3, Richard G. Schick BM2, Admiral
Fontaine, Bob Whritner AGCM, Bob (Moofy)Morstadt {What did the hare lip
cow say? "Moof"}, and many more someday soon I hope. I had the
honor of being the sickest, the longest of anyone ever on board the USS
Hissem. It used to be favorite past time when anyone got bored....
"Lets all go up and hang around radio and watch Ummy puke!" I
would like to hear from more old shipmates. 865-689-6333 Ummy

Comments: A 'BIG HI' to all you guys who served on Hissem during
Op.Deepfreeze.I was on HMNZS Pukaki F424 when we shared picket duty at
approx. 60deg.South. You may recall a couple of jackstay transfers
undertaken in the bitter cold of dawn, together with the affectionally
thrown fresh fruit and potatoes across the narrow abyss onto the
respective fantail's - also the much awaited fan mail after about 3-4
weeks at sea. Iwas also on Pukaki during the deployment of USS Mills
DER383. I also remember you with the same fond memories. Remember guys?
you ain't been to sea until youv'e been to 60 SOUTH.

Comments: Wonderful site Chuck!! Great ship, great crew, great
skipper (RADM Fontaine - USN Retired). Hissem, my first ship. I believe
no Ensign was ever "George" (junior ensign) longer than I was
(June of 63 til May of 64). Most of all I remember "Deepfreeze
64" and the Dog Rocks pickets. I believe I set a record for being
"in hack" too. Something like three months....live and learn.
Would like to hear from shipmates...its been a long time. We had some
thrills, and lived to tell about them!! Anyone remember "Leading SA
Puckett?? He was very proud of that. Only duce on the ship when we
returned from Deepfreeze...if memory serves..Take Care All. I will visit
this site often.
