(my first time at sea),fog off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, knocking
ice off the superstructure while visiting Argentia, navigating through
fields of icebergs in the North Atlantic, Visiting Lisbon, and Vigo. A
lifetime of experiences compressed into one year.

Comments: 9/1/01 - This morning I contacted KC4USV, the first
time I had contacted Antarctica since contacting the Hissam, 38 years
ago. I lost the QSL card in the last 5 years. Would you please tell me
the call sign that the Hissam used. The Hammerberg was in the Straights
of Magellan and I was K2UEL at the time of the contact, from Newport to
the bottom of the world. Joe - W8KNO

Comments: The Hissem was my first ship out of boot camp. I was
with the deck apes. Fond memories of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Pearl, and of
course Market Time patrol. Mary Sue painting the ship in Hong Kong. That
sure saved us alot of work. Stealing an Ice Cream machine in Alongapo
and Capt. Hand officially denying the existence of it while at the same
time telling us we had 1 week to get it installed on the mess deck. I
was buddies with a Ron Mortensen (Morty) who was from Seattle. I only
had the one west pack cruise and then went to Coronado for POW camp,
counterinsurggency training and other fun stuff and then Vietnam for a
112 of two years.

Comments: Just rechecking your fine site, Chuck. I was a fellow
DER sailor on the USS Falgout DER-324 from January of 1966 to October of
1968. I remember many "happy" days steaming up and down the
Viet Nam coast blockading the mighty Viet Cong Navy during our Market
Time patrols! Those were the days, huh? My website listed above has a
section dedicated to the Falgout and to all the good men who ever sailed
the high seas in her. Everyone is invited to come and visit. Smooth
sailing and good luck to all my fellow DER sailors, the best damn
sailors who ever sailed the high seas!

Comments: I was only on the Hissem for a few months and made the
trip from Pearl Harbor to Maire Island. I was young and this was my
first ship and I remember it well. I remember the pride of the crew. I
think It was the USS Camp? that was being sold to the Vietnamese and our
ship was in such better shape. (except for that one Diesle.)

Comments: Hi Shipmates, in all of 21 years served in the Navy, my
52 months on the USS Hissem was the very best. I worked in engine rooms
B-1, B-2, and B-4. I was also in charge of "A-Gang." Have many
grand sea stories and memories. Looking forward to seeing all of my old
shipmates at the reunion in Las Vegas in October. If anyone out there
remembers me, and would like to get in touch, please do so at the above
e-mail address or give me call at (909) 989-2223.

Comments: Served during Operation Deepfreeze and have memories of
the wonderful people we met in Dunedin, NZ (our homeport away from
home). We had a GREAT crew, few personnel problems except for becoming a
shellback. Missed the family while away but enjoyed our shore leave and
the many ports we visited during this Around the World Cruise. I retired
as a PNCS at 19 1/2 years and went on to get a Master's degree in
Counseling plus a little post graduate studies. Taught HS, College and
started my own Supervisor/Management and personnel training business and
traveled the US doing training for several years. Started a wedding
business about six years ago and now perform about 500 weddings a
year--I like this stay-at-home type work. Read about the Hissem in Shift
Colors and hope I can make the October reunion. If any ole' shipmates
get around this area, please contact me.
