 After
recommissioning in '55 USS Hissem was assigned to Comcortron 16 out of
Newport R.I. Our mission in those days was as the seaward extension of the
Dewline Defense. The Dewline Defense was a series of radar stations across
northern Canada. Cortron 16 and Cortron 18 comprised the seaward
extension.
We would sail from Newport to Argentia Newfoundland to refuel and then go
out and assume duty (for 30 days) on one of the 4 stations between
Newfoundland and the Azores.
As a floating radar station we were there to provide "early
warning" in case
of an attack from Russia. As the rattle snake gives "early
warning" before
it attacks we would give early warning if attacked.
That is why we had the rattlesnake on the patch along with the words
"early
warning". |
